Practice/Process is a series of professional development meetups for emerging artists, designers and other creative practitioners hosted by Possible Worlds.  We discuss a particular theme, focusing on the "what" of guests’ creative practices, and the "how" of their process.

In February we’re taking on an essential part of creative practice: designing a digital presence and, specifically, how to do it effectively using social media. From the worlds of writing/zine-making/book reviewing and experimental music, this month’s guests are Ariel Bissett and Greg White. Fresh to the Ottawa-Gatineau creative scenes via Guelph, ON, and London, UK, these two have built a meaningful and engaged online following around each of their own practices. They will share their experiences of being based in small/large cities while using different platforms to showcase their work, grow their audiences, generate income, and make connections that lead to creative opportunities.

As an open-dialogue meetup, this event welcomes creative practitioners in all fields who’d like to discuss how our digital presences can be designed into tools to grow our careers.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

ARIEL BISSETT is a 23-year-old Canadian writer and video maker. She shares her bookish passion with over 130K subscribers on her YouTube channel. Ariel is currently pursuing a Masters in English Literature at the University of Ottawa. Learn more at arielbissett.com.

GREGORY WHITE is an experimental electronic musician working between Ottawa (CA) and London (UK), and at the intersection of art, music, and technology.

With White Noises, Greg aims to broaden the awareness and understanding of experimental music and modular synthesisers. These topics are made approachable through tutorial videos on the White Noises YouTube channel and his personal Instagram account. In the process he hopes to help build a passionate and inclusive community of musicians who are as excited about sharing knowledge as they are about making music.

He also releases his own personal music on Bandcamp,  ranging from dreamy atmospheres and joyful melodies to distorted pulsing rhythms.

He attended the University of East Anglia where he received a First Class Honours degree in Music and Technology, specialising in Sonic Arts. After being introduced to coding by building his own digital instruments and interactive performances, Greg chose to study an MA in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Guillermo Trejo is a Mexican Artist based in Ottawa. He completed his BFA at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving in Mexico City with a specialization in printmaking, and moved to Canada in 2007. The experience of immigration and distance has shaped Trejo's work. Since moving to Ottawa, he has earned an MFA from the University of Ottawa and has been an active member of the artistic community. He has exhibited at the Ottawa Art Gallery, Galerie Saw Gallery, and other artist-run centers across the country.

In 2014, Trejo participated in the Québec City Biennial and was shortlisted for the Ottawa RBC Emerging Artist Prize. He has been an Artist-in-Residence at Creative Fusion (Cleveland), and the International Symposium on Contemporary Art of Baie-Saint-Paul. In 2014, Guillermo also received the Young Artist FONCA (Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, Mexico) grant for Mexican Artists and a production grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. In addition, Trejo has worked as a research consultant for the National Gallery of Canada. He also teaches at the Ottawa School of Art (OSA) and directs OSA Editions, a project that invites local artists to create limited edition prints at the OSA print studio.

Valerie Yobé has a PhD in Semiology and has been teaching as an associate professor in Graphic Design at l’École Multidisciplinaire de l’Image (ÉMI)  at the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO), since 2001. After starting a career in advertising in Paris, she continued in graphic design in Quebec with clients in the social and cultural fields. She is an accredited DGA (designer graphique agréé) by the Société des Designers Graphiques du Québec (SDGQ), where she was elected to the Board of Directors in 2013. Last year, Yobé became the Directrice of l’École Multidisciplinaire de l’Image at UQO. 

In 2014, Yobé created the non for profit organization la tribu grafik. Through activities like curating, collaborative initiatives between practitioners, editorial projects, critical thinking, and workshops locally and overseas, la tribu grafik conceptualizes and produces research-creation projects that rethink the uses of design, decompartmentalize practices, and innovate socially and culturally. Yobé promotes the practice of and research in graphic design in order to make it a real object of knowledge.

This year, Yobé received a three year grant from Le Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC),  to support the research and creation of a project called Graphisme Citoyen: pratiques artistiques et construction du lien social au sein de l’école primaire.

Please note artist Joi Arcand, originally scheduled for this edition, will be looking to join us for a future edition.

This month, we’re focusing on artists working in various communities. They'll speak to their practices which include facilitating, educating, and mentoring, some with vulnerable communities, in Ottawa and beyond.

Guest speakers:

Speakers Mique Michelle and Mailyne Briggs both facilitate youth-centered visual art programming.  As a graffiti artist and Ottawa School of Art alumni, Mique’s work takes her to schools and communities throughout Ontario where she includes children and youth in the creation of collaborative mural projects.  Mailyne is the founder of social enterprise/creative studio  Dream.Love.Grow., and non-profit A.R.T (A Real Thought) In Action.  Her work at Dream.Love.Grow allows her to donate proceeds and creative services to local causes, while A.R.T In Action delivers programming to youth facing barriers in Ottawa and Nunavut. Stephanie Nadeau is Head of Ottawa Art Gallery's growing Public, Educational and Community Programs department, where she has advanced the Gallery’s commitment to accessibility by forging a programming and consultation partnership with Tangled Art + Disability, developed volunteer programming councils for both youth and older adults, instigated childcare during exhibition openings and events.

Beyond the experiences of our speakers, we’ll discuss various opportunities and resources to fund and sustain involvement within various communities.  This meetup is open to creative practitioners who are curious about working within different communities, as well as representatives from organizations interested in developing creative programming.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Mique Michelle is a Franco-Ontarienne from Field whose nomadic journeys allow her to exercise her graffiti art from Northern Ontario to France. Through her travels and studies at the Ottawa School of Art, she has evolved as a mixed media artist and an active facilitator of the arts in Ottawa. Her work can be seen in galleries, public buildings, and in outdoor venues. Mique often includes youth to create with her in collaborative mural projects, as she remains a strong advocate for abolishing negative perceptions of graffiti and street art.

Mailyne Briggs (aka Mai) is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist, photographer, video producer and entrepreneur. In 2007 she started Dream Love Grow Media, an arts-based social enterprise, which allocates proceeds and services to help local causes, charities and individuals in need. In 2014, Mai and a fellow artist dreamed up A Real Thought (A.R.T.) In Action and by 2015 the organization became a registered non-profit. A.R.T in Action provides free 12-week art workshops for youth facing barriers in Ottawa and Nunavut. Notable achievements in the organization's first two years include: paid mentorships for youth to start their own businesses; two satellite workshops in Arviat, Nunavut; three workshops with youth living with disabilities; a Canada150 collaboration that involved our youth showcasing their work in the Toronto Subway System; and now, a partnership with CNIB, an art workshop for blind and low vision youth.

Stephanie Nadeau is Head of Ottawa Art Gallery's growing Public, Educational and Community Programs department. She has more than doubled OAG’s public programming attendance by developing an expanded program of events, programs and projects that promote public engagement with the Gallery. Stephanie studied art at the Ontario College of Art and Design (BFA 2005) and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA 2008), and brings previous professional programming experience from the Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop's University and The Banff Centre. She continues to foster ongoing mentorship opportunities in education and public programs, cultivating the OAG’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to develop professional skills in a not-for-profit arts environment. Her outreach into the community also includes serving on the Board of Directors of Being Studio (formerly H'art of Ottawa), an innovative visual art studio that facilitates creative opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities.

Practice/Process is a new series of professional development meet ups for emerging artists, designers and other creative practitioners hosted by Possible Worlds.  

This month, we’re focusing on residencies and hosting a discussion led by photo-based artist Olivia Johnston, painter Ryan Smeeton, and print artist and Possible Worlds co-founder Melanie Yugo. Other creatives who have participated in residencies are also invited to attend and share their experiences.

Drawing from their recent residency experiences in Senegal, Spain, and the Philippines respectively, Olivia, Ryan, and Melanie will share their insights on finding, applying for, and financing residencies, as well as managing time and projects while away, and how their practices have been informed by their residencies since coming home.

Regardless of where you are in your career, residencies are opportunities to dive into research, learn new techniques, make connections to larger art communities, and access resources, ideas, and landscapes unavailable at home. Whether you’re curious about the possibilities of residencies, or you have your own experiences to share, join us on Sunday September 24 to discuss how to make a residency happen, and how to make the most out of it once you’re there.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

OLIVIA JOHNSTON is an artist based in Ottawa, Canada, and is currently the Photographic History Instructor at the School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa. Her practice includes both photo-based and multi-media work, within which she is preoccupied by questions of art history, the photographic image, gender, individuality, vulnerability, and identity.

In 2017, Johnston was a finalist for the RBC Emerging Artist Award. Her work has been displayed nationally, including in Ottawa's Nuit Blanche, as a part of the City of Ottawa’s collection, and in the largest photography event in the world, the CONTACT Photography Festival in Toronto. She has also shown her work internationally, in New York, NY; Portland, OR; Saint-Louis, Senegal; and London, England.

In March of 2016, Johnston attended a month-long residency at WAAW in Saint-Louis, Senegal. The work she produced while she was there will be part of a two-person exhibition with artist Shaya Ishaq entitled overcome/reconcile at the Ottawa Art Gallery in April of 2018.

RYAN SMEETON is an artist based in Ottawa. He obtained his BFA from the University of Ottawa in 2011, and balances his time between a studio painting practice and creating site-specific murals. He most recently completed large mural commissions for the Canada Science and Technology Museum, the City of Ottawa, and Carleton University. His work takes on the purpose of presenting an alternate perspective of the world that is a median between our reality and an imagined one. In July 2015 he completed a month-long residency at La Postiza artist centre in the rural community of La Cueva, Spain.

MELANIE YUGO is a Filipina-Canadian artist-researcher, educator, artistic director and cultural worker born in Toronto, now based in Ottawa, Canada. She co-founded and directs Possible Worlds, a gallery, shop, publisher and project space, as well as the multidisciplinary collective/studio Spins & Needles, recognized for its participatory art and music programming in non-traditional venues. As a print artist, Melanie specializes in silkscreening and Risograph printing in the form of prints and artist books, exploring themes of community, culture, identity and place. Melanie received a B.Sc. in Psychology from McGill University, an M.Sc. in Social and Cultural Psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and completed summer studies in silkscreening at the School of Visual Arts.  

Melanie completed a research-based residency with 98B Collaboratory in Manila, Philippines in February 2017.
