You'll explore the basics to get started playing vinyl from a DJ perspective, from learning about equipment to techniques to programming to the roots of DJ culture, to then applying your new knowledge on the decks.

Based on the idea of turntables as instruments, Jason and Kurt will take participants through:

  • An overview of the roots of DJ culture
  • Essential equipment for DJing (turntables and DJ mixer) and how to use each
  • Selection and care of records
  • Beat matching, tempo control, mixing tracks, playing with sound
  • Programming and selection of tracks
  • Blending your first 1-2 songs on the decks.

Facilitators: Ottawa-based DJ Kurt Yates and Possible Worlds Co-Director/DJ Jason Skilz have been spinning and collecting records, each for over 15 years.
