WORKSHOP: Introduction to Clay at Home [ONLINE]

Join us for this introduction to clay workshop with the next exhibiting artist at Possible Worlds, Ayesh Kanani! Ayesh will be exhibiting their work this spring/summer as part of their upcoming exhibition, Ground Truths.

The workshop will include a step-by step live tutorial on hand-building your very own vase forms and applique surface design techniques. There will be guided instruction along with time to experiment and play with your own style. Participants will come away with a hand decorated bud vase and knowledge to create more forms.

You also have the option of purchasing a Clay Kit, which includes a slab of air dry clay to make multiple vessels at home + essential tools, to start creating right away.

WHAT YOU’LL TAKE AWAY

1. Essentials for creating with clay at home, including how to make vessels.
2. Important tips for setting up your space
3. New tips and techniques for tactile surface designs
4. Resources to continue exploring with clay on your own.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

No experience required! This is an interactive workshop and demo that is open to all levels. However, you must be comfortable using Zoom. The tutorial will be at an introductory level, but participants with clay experience are welcome to take part. There will be guided instruction with lots of opportunity to ask questions and share ideas/techniques and discoveries. Experimentation with clay and personal style is highly encouraged! Anyone from anywhere can join.

ARTIST FACILITATOR

Ayesh Kanani has a growing a personal practice that allows them to study materials, explore important histories, and be a part of creating new possibilities with clay. They are passionate about building a clay practice that is slow and intentional and grounded in building better access. Their work is informed by their lived experiences as a queer person of colour and their work background in LGBTQ+ advocacy work and disability arts. They have been learning through open studio practice, taking classes, exploring mentorship, and developing new work. Over the years they have been growing their skills and taking on bigger projects. Ayesh’s practice is currently based at the Gladstone Clayworks Cooperative Studio in Ottawa, Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

  • A laptop or similar smart device with Zoom downloaded (Create an account and download Zoom here for free: https://www.zoom.us/).

  • Blank paper or a sketchbook.

  • Slab or air dry clay, sponge, pin tool, metal rib, wooden ribs, clay cutter, and trimming tools OR Purchase a Ready-to-Go Clay Kit*

  • After you register and pay your ticket fee you'll get an email confirming your payment and therefore your registration.

  • If you don't already have an account, sign up for and download Zoom (https://www.zoom.us) and make sure you're able to log on. If you've never used Zoom before you can find a tutorial on joining a meeting here.

  • After registering you'll receive a link before the workshop start time. Click on it a little before the start so we can check you in and then get started.

NOTES

  • You can purchase a Ready-to-Go Clay Kit before or after the workshop.

  • You can upgrade your tier at any time, either before the workshop or within 15 days after your workshop . Just let us know and we'll send you an invoice for the difference.

  • The Ready-to-Go Clay Kit is available for in-person pickup at Possible Worlds or can be shipped. Shipping fees are not included. If shipping is selected for delivery before the workshop, the kit must be purchased”
    - 5 days before the workshop if shipping to Ontario-Quebec
    - 10 days before the workshop if living in other parts of Canada
    - For other parts of the world, delivery of kits before the workshop are not guaranteed.
