NOTE: This course takes place over two sessions at Possible Worlds: July 17 from 6-9 PM, and July 24 from 6-9 PM.
In the first session of Hypercolour Futures, join artist Eric Francisco of Reflex Editions (Toronto) for an artist talk and session exploring experimental publishing and one’s relationship with place through the synthesis of photography, text, and abstraction.
SESSION INFO
Drawing from the abstract practice of psychogeography—an experimental exploration of environments to uncover hidden meanings and emotional landscapes—as well as historical and contemporary influences such as the Situationist International, Surrealism, and Fluxus, Eric will explore how artist’s books can function as re-imagined landscapes, offering new ways to navigate and experience place.
Participants will engage in a facilitated experimental image-text writing activity that incorporates ancestral knowledge, photography, and automatic writing, followed by a group discussion and collaborative book sequencing session. The workshop will culminate in a Risograph-printed publication that participants will have the opportunity to collate and bind.
Eric will also speak about his artist publishing practice, including the formation of Reflex Editions, a Toronto-based DIY publishing collective that functions as a creative space for exploring the collaborative and experimental potential of handmade, small-edition publications and ephemera. He will discuss how wandering, photography, recontextualization, writing, and collaboration inform his own artistic bookmaking.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Participants will be asked to submit in advance two landscape photographs (can be of the same place or different from each other) that are drawn from an existing body of work, personal or found archives, or new captures. The landscape subject can be urban and/or natural, personal and/or political, poetic and/or literal, documentary and/or metaphorical, banal and/or magical, absurd and/or monumental. These will be printed and will be given to the respective participants during the workshop to use as reference points.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
