SESSION INFO
Note: Priority for registration will be given to queer participants.
Can a book be a theatre, a space of activation and action? Can a puppet be a placard, a medium of dissent, an object to enact as resistance? In the second session of Hypercolour Futures, join artists Jenny Lin and Eloisa Aquino of B&D Press (Montreal) for an artist talk and session in which participants will be guided in building a tunnel book as a portable theatre, along with paper puppets and a short script / statement / poem they will collaboratively enact. Priority for registration will be given to queer participants. No prior experience is required.
This workshop will include a viewing of “The Tunnel” (a paper puppet performance by Jenny and Eloisa), a presentation and discussion on puppets in protest and queer resistance, writing and sketching exercises, structure building and puppet creation.
Jenny and Eloisa will also speak about their artist publishing practice, from founding B&D Press in 2009, to participating in art fairs in Canada and internationally, to actively engaging with the art and zine community, to centering queer voices and experimental artists in their work.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
All materials will be provided at the session.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
All are welcome. No experience is necessary and all levels of creativity are welcome.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Jenny Lin is a visual artist based in Montreal. Their practice centres around experimental narrative, blending autobiography together with fiction. Using digitally-rendered and hand-drawn imagery, they use print media, video or web-based platforms to explore formats that include print, artist's books and zines, video, installation, and interactive web projects. They currently teach in the Print Media program at Concordia University.
Eloisa Aquino is an artist and zinester based in Montreal. Originally from Brazil, she moved to Canada to pursue a M.A. in Media Studies at Concordia University, where she researched the food of immigrants in Montreal. Always active in the micropublishing scene, having published art and poetry fanzines since the 1980s in São Paulo, she currently runs the micropress B&D Press, in Montreal, alongside Jenny Lin.
B&D Press is a micro press that focuses on experimental queer art zines. Jenny and Eloisa use this platform to explore non-fictional narratives – both personal and historical – and modes of production, presentation, and distribution of art.
