Digital Arts Resource Centre (formerly SAW Video) and Possible Worlds join forces for a 3-session online workshop in June on digital self-publishing.
The ability to thoughtfully present digital publications is more important than ever as we continue to navigate our pandemic digital worlds. Web pages have the potential to become as interactive and sensory as traditional print materials, as well as being an accessible, non-cost prohibitive way for artists, writers and art spaces to self-publish their own works meaningfully (no offence PDFs).
This online workshop will provide an introduction of some of the radical histories of self-publishing and zine-making. Registrants will learn the basics of HTML and CSS and how to best use these web development tools for digital self-publishing. Participants will learn how to create a very simple webpage using HTML and CSS, learn how to upload their web page to the internet and how to apply/experiment with analogue print approaches, aesthetics and style principles in their web pages.
Participants are encouraged to come with a project or concept for a digital zine or publication but this is not a requirement. We encourage participants to reference Possible World’s Zine Making 101 Mini Guide if you’d like some inspiration or prompts on where to start. All participants will leave the workshop with the knowledge and tools to create and experiment with digital self-publishing. Join DARC for a follow up workshop: Creative Coding for Web Art starting July 8th to further expand the skills gained in this workshop.

Possible Worlds
Possible Worlds is an artist-run platform specializing in graphic art, print and electronic music. Based in Ottawa, Canada, we present and produce works and programming that amplify the voices of underrepresented, emerging and experimental artists from Canada and internationally. This includes the presentation and in-house production of artist prints, zines, books, records and cassettes. Through our outreach arm, we operate a physical art space, record shop and print studio embedded in a local neighbourhood, as well as design community-driven art and music programming such as workshops, exhibitions and performances. Conor Byron is a software developer and artist based in Ottawa, ON. Specializing in sound and graphics programming, he has designed and developed applications for screen-based platforms, installations, musical performances and theatre projects. Inspired by the tools and techniques of animation, video games and electronic music, he pursues new forms of intimate and meditative audiovisual software experiences.
