Explore the possibilities of the book form in this introductory workshop to bookbinding. We’ll begin with a brief overview of the history and current context of artists’ books, followed by examples of bookbinding methods, including saddle stitch, 3-hole pamphlet, and Japanese binding . Participants will then work on assembling their own books using a selected bookbinding method, ready to take home with them at the end of the workshop.

The workshop will begin with a brief overview of the print process, the resurgence of the Risograph machine within graphic art and design circles, and examples of work from international print artists. You'll then work with cut-outs, collages, drawings and text to experiment and create a collaborative art print with fellow participants you get to take home.. Participants also have the option of having their own 2-colour design printed after the workshop .

Explore the possibilities of the book form in this introductory workshop to bookbinding. We’ll begin with a brief overview of the history and current context of artists’ books, followed by examples of bookbinding methods, including saddle stitch, 3-hole pamphlet, and Japanese binding . Participants will then work on assembling their own books using a selected bookbinding method, ready to take home with them at the end of the workshop.

Join us for this introduction to abstract painting with guest artist, Andrea Stokes.

Play with shape, form, texture, colour and line to create your own designs and compositions with gouache paint. Learn about colour-theory and mixing, and experiment with transparency and opacity to achieve unique effects. Try different mark making methods and tools, many of which can be found in your own home. Take away your own unique artworks, and the knowledge and materials to start abstract painting on your own.

All materials will be provided and are included in the workshop fee.

The workshop will begin with a brief overview of the print process, the resurgence of the Risograph machine within graphic art and design circles, and examples of work from international print artists. You'll then work with cut-outs, collages, drawings and text to experiment and create a collaborative art print with fellow participants you get to take home.. Join us for this introduction to clay workshop with guest artist, Ayesh Kanani.

You’ll learn the basics of building a clay vessel and apply surface design techniques. There will be guided instruction along with time to experiment and play with your own style. Participants will come away with a kiln-fired hand decorated mug 2-3 weeks after the workshop, and knowledge to continue making more clay vessels. Experimentation with clay and personal style is highly encouraged!

Learn about the basics of making inks from plants.

Join Ottawa-based visual artist Wendy Feldberg for a special workshop introducing you to botanical ink making. In a fun and collaborative environment, you’ll explore sustainable methods to create natural ink derived from plants, discuss native species ideal for ink making, and receive an overview of the process from foraging plants to extracting pigments to using ink for various paper and fabric projects.

You’ll then explore the rich qualities of the inks by mixing and playing with various colours and how they interact with types of papers.

ARTIST FACILITATOR

Wendy Feldberg is an Ottawa-based artist who is passionate about sharing her vast expertise of natural ink making with others.

“I live in Ottawa, Ontario, in the boreal eco zone. I create painted, printed and stitched art textiles, papers and artist books on mostly botanical themes. I am always inspired by the beautiful landscapes and plant life, both wild and cultivated, of this rugged region of Canada.

Working with nature as a gardener and as an artist is one of my life’s chief constants and consolations. My printed and stitched textiles and papers, like scrolls, become botanical records of plants and their environments in every season.

My basic method is to print and stitch on textiles and papers, embroidering by hand and machine. My intention is to build up layers of coloured marks to express feeling and concept with line, colour and texture.

As well as painting marks on substrates with acrylics or natural dyes, I use eco printing, a monotype process that applies pigments from plants, soils and minerals directly from plants onto natural fibers.

Printing and dyeing with native plants from my garden and foraged from the local environment have become my special interest.

I publish internationally about eco printing, give occasional classes and presentations and document all aspects of my art adventures on my blog Threadborne.”

Option 3: $139 CAD

The workshop will begin with a brief overview of the print process, the resurgence of the Risograph machine within graphic art and design circles, and examples of work from international print artists. You'll then work with cut-outs, collages, drawings and text to experiment and create a collaborative art print with fellow participants you get to take home..
